The day we lost Jennie

Today was another hot and humid day in Boston.  We made our way back to Concord to hopefully get into Walden Pond.  Jennie had looked it up and told us that it would be 15 min in and 15 min out according to her research.  We got lucky and made it in right before they closed up the park again due to large crowds.  We made our way down to the pond, it is simple and beautiful there.  The water was very clear and calm.  We found a map that said which way to go for Thoreau's house site, it was only .5 miles away so off we went on our 15 min tour.

It took us quite a bit longer than 15 min to make our way along the wooded path that leads to the house.  It was hot, and humid, and I was drenched in sweat by the time we reached it.  I am glad we did go though!  The way back was pretty hard, many times I was not sure I wasn't going to pass out and have to be carried out of the woods!  Apparently Jennie was having these thoughts as well.  Cheryl just pushed on, she claims that she was considering pulling us by the backpack straps, however we just kept going...and going.  At one point I almost asked a man to throw water on me from the pond, I was soooo very hot, and I knew if I went down to the water I wouldnt make it back to the path and I would have to swim to the shore in my jeans!   Which in hindsight may have been the better option for me to take.  I wonder what the other people would have thought if I had just walked in fully clothed?   It was really that hot.  Our 15 min in and out turned into about 2 hours of "easy" path walking.  Finally I sat on a stump and was considering calling the fire department for help.  Jennie sat with me for all of maybe 3 min before seeing an ant and jumping up and declaring it was time to move on.  Thank goodness for the ant saving me the embarrassment of having to be carted up by helicopter or however they would get me up that hill.  Cheryl had gone down to the water to wet our cloth thingys to cool us down.

The best part however was when we were making our way to the car.  Cheryl had to use the bathroom so she wandered over to the bathrooms, and I had Jennie right behind me.  I was on a mission to get to the car alive!  She was right behind me....I swear she was!   I was sitting in the car with the ac on full force.  All of a sudden my joy was interrupted by Cheryl.  She comes to the door and says.  "Where is my mom?"  I say right behind me!   "SHE IS NOT BEHIND YOU!"  well she was.....I swear it.   "GET IN THE CAR AND DRIVE TIL YOU FIND HER!".  So off we go to find Jennie.  Cheryl told me she didn't use the bathroom because it was a portapotty.  So we KNEW Jennie was not in the bathroom.  I was trying to figure out what happened.  We had made it all the way to the cabin and back, how could I lose her now.  Cheryl was not amused at all with this predicament and was calling her phone.  No luck.  I was about to call Andrea and ask her to track her cell phone and then she appears.  "Hey, I used the recycled soap and water!"  She had gone to the portapotty!   Cheryl claims that at this point she was so hot and tired that her brain was mush.  Jennie was laughing walking to the car.  Cheryl turns to me and says "She is LAUGHING!, this is NOT funny!  I am not amused at all!"

I think at this point we were all done with the heat but we move on to Emerson's house, which was made easy because they didn't have a visitors center so a few photos and on to North Bridge where the revolution began.   This was neat, but we were still hot and tired from the long trek around the pond.  We ran...no we crawled over to see that.  It was a beautiful day.  I am so glad we didn't have to put out a silver alert for Jennie and that we all survived.  The good thing is that we have all walked a bunch, my goal is to keep moving when we get home.

Today makes a month of travel.  I have loved this trip, probably one of the greatest I have ever taken!   When we got back to the hotel we ate pizza then I slipped into a long nap.  I feel much better now:)   Tomorrow we leave Boston and head to Amherst and then Pittsfield and Lenox.

Here are pictures....
